Some only think to see a chiropractor when something has gone wrong instead of seeing one as a way to prevent something from going wrong in the first place.

The best and safest therapy that you should use to help relieve pain and inflammation is ice therapy.

When the spine becomes misaligned, the nerve gets pinched and the muscles and ligaments get strained and stretched. What results is inflammation, which is characterized by pain, swelling, tenderness and heat. Although this inflammation is a necessary part of health, it must be reduced before further healing can progress.

What happens inside your body is the same thing that occurs with a sprained ankle. The problem is that we can’t see the injury with the swelling and inflammation. But just as you would ice a sprained ankle until the swelling and pain goes away, so should you ice your area of injury. Whether it is your neck, mid back, lower back or pelvis, the best rule to follow is: “ALWAYS USE ICE, NEVER USE HEAT”

Heat increases blood flow which causes more swelling, inflammation and pain. Use ice! Ice cubes in a plastic bag, a bag of frozen vegetables, or frozen gel packs will all be effective.

Instructions: Ice the area of pain until the skin feels rather numb to the touch. Take the ice pack off and re-apply 1-2 hours later. Repeat until pain is gone. **Use a thin cloth between your skin and the ice pack to avoid freezer burn.

This regular repeated use of ice will relieve your pain quickly, effectively and safely.
